I find it SO difficult to create without purpose, and when you can’t really leave the house and do your normal routine, purpose is hard to find. Last year I created an infographic to show information from Ofcom’s Children’s Media Usage Report. I find this report absolutely fascinating as it very clearly demonstrates the developments with technology in our youth of today; the youth that are going to be our future.
Recently I discovered that the 2019 report has been published, and when I read it it really inspired me to create a new series.
These are the main findings of the report :
-Half of ten year olds own a smartphone, while only a quarter of nine year olds do
-Children use smart speakers more than radios
-More children watch VOD than broadcast TV
-Children are more likely to look to YouTube than Netflix for their on demand content
-There has been quite an increase in girls gaming
-One in ten children signed some form of online petition
-Children have more understanding this year of sponsored content and how the BBC is funded
-Worryingly, safety online seems to have decreased with now half of 12-15 year olds reporting having seen hateful content online.
-Parents seem to have picked up on this; only 55% feel that the benefits of being online outweigh the risks, down from 65% in 2016.
Each of these findings can provide me the concept from which to create a piece of work, so this is the challenge I am setting myself. Over the next few weeks I aim to create informational animated infographics to convey each of these facts.
I started working on some morphing tests the other day that I think will be really useful to form the basis of one of these pieces.
