Making 2D Fire in Cinema 4D

1–2 minutes

For the Honne Video, I want to use flames engulfing the page as a transition, but creating this is proving harder than I thought.

I drew up the concept frame by frame on my iPad, and I really like how it looks apart from of course the slow frame rate. I just couldn’t get this effect to translate to After Effects though.

I tried using masks to define the shape but the interpolation was wrong and would not change. I wanted a smoother transition between masks and as you can see in the video, the movement is very jerky and unnatural.

I tried using multiple flame shapes and adding wiggles to them but this just looks unnatural too.

I almost gave up on this idea, but then I remembered Cinema 4D’s 2D shading and thought that that could provide me with a much more natural effect that could be exported and used as a mask.

I didn’t know where to start with creating something natural like fire though, I’ve only ever really modelled solid objects (with the exception of my lava lamp last semester). I knew EJ from Eyedesyn would have a relevant tutorial though, and he did!

The video shows how to make fire from a spherical source, and I needed to create something longer.  I found the tutorial very useful however to learn how to make the fire effect.

I applied the technique to a long cuboid and got this effect, which looks great in the final piece:
