I always knew that Cinema 4D was capable of creating nice looking 2D shots, and had heard whispers of a mysterious ‘Sketch and Toon’ feature, but I always assumed that I would stick to After Effects for my 2D work and leave Cinema 4D to do anything 3D.
My curiosity has gotten the better of me though, and I decided to look into the Sketch and Toon feature, and as it turns out, its not as confusing as I assumed!
As usual, I looked to my favourite creator Eyesdesyn for a tutorial, and luckily he had one!
The tutorial is quite long, but it is mostly experimentation, the real skills are very simple. The key is all in the materials; you change your regular material by removing all of the channels, and switching the luminance channel on. That’s the main backbone of it! To then add in the shadows and definition, there are settings that give you the ability to change colours based on light levels, and create your own shadows.
Instead of following the tutorial fully, I decided to just learn the basics and experiment for myself.
To get the hang of it, I used one of my models from last semester, and I think it looks awesome! I will need to get used to it and explore further into the shaders that you can use but just knowing that this is available has opened up so many opportunities in my head.
