Looking Into Branding

2–3 minutes

Before fully engrossing myself in designing my channel idents, I wanted to take some care and design the brand identity, to give more meaning to the pieces I create.

Obviously since its a theoretical brand, and I am not trying to demonstrate my ability to create a brand identity, I will not be thinking too deeply about the audience, the competition, the brand ethics etc, I am more trying to demonstrate my ability to take a brand and create work for them. I do however need to have a backstory for the brand, to inspire the pieces I create.

Key points for developing a brand identity

  • Who are your audience?
  • Who are your competition?
  • What are your brands values?
  • What is your logo?
  • What are your main colours?
  • What is your main font?

Audience

  • 16-35
  • Liberal political views
  • Based in UK
  • Any gender

Logo & Colour Scheme

Ideas

I have seen a lot of pipes created in Cinema 4D and always wanted to create my own. This piece would be more abstract like some of the BBC 2 ones, as the number 7 would be hidden within many other shapes on the screen. This one would have a lot going on and could possibly be a longer ident.

I think it could be really interesting to use the toon shader tools to make a 2D piece as well. I could have each of these squares as a cube and have them all flip over using a field to reveal the shape of a 7 in some of the cubes in white.

This is supposed to be a balloon-like thing but my drawing skills are lacking. For this one I could have the 7 deflated and then inflate it using the pressure tools within the softbody modifier, I think it could look awesome.

Font

Personally, I am a fan of bold but friendly fonts (such as helvetica, arial and calibri), so I will be using one of these for my logo. Like I said, the logo isnt the be-all and end-all, but just needs to look professional and believeable.
