Initial Concept Lyric Video 1- Honne

2–3 minutes

Honne – Warm on a Cold Night

Initially, I wrote out the lyrics for the section of the song that I wanted to create the piece around (this is the pre-chorus and the chorus) and I used the album artwork to come up with a colour scheme.  The scheme includes a very dark grey (I think black would be too harsh with the other colours) and a slightly dull orange and yellow, accompanied by a pale yellow (since a white would also be too harsh in this colour scheme). I will be only doing flat artwork for this piece as I think that the hand-drawn style lends its self to this best. With each line written out, I decided to draft up some stills to inspire each part of the video.

For this one, the words ‘And I can’t help but’ will come onto the screen first, then the camera will zoom out to reveal the word ‘wonder’ and a thought bubble will appear.

In this one, the yellow words will appear first, the correct way up. The next to ‘ended’ the word ‘up’ will appear, but will be sideways. The camera will then rotate so that the word ‘up’ is the right way up, and then the shot will pan over to reveal the word ‘alright’ on the right.

I’m not set on this design yet, I would definitely like incorporate some form of heart into this slide, whether its a physical representation, or I give something a heartbeat. This idea could definitely change completely. At the same time, not every line of lyrics needs a graphic to accompany it, so perhaps this part could just be plain hand-drawn text?

This is the first line of the chorus. I think it could be nice to symbolise this change in section by changing the background colour and I had the idea to transition to this through a hand-drawn fire animation (the gif of this can be seen below). I haven’t done much hand-drawn animation before,  however, Procreate (my drawing software on my iPad) has a new animation tool that lets you use each layer as a frame to create gifs, and offers onion skinning to help you animate. I found this really helpful, but it turns out that drawing fire is hard. I will need to study how fire naturally moves to get a more realistic representation, but I really love this idea and think that this will definitely end up in the final piece somehow.

This is a gif! It will play if you click it!
