Here are some other lyric videos that I have looked at to inspire my work, some have given me ideas of what to do, and others have shown me what I want to avoid.
I think this video is amazing, I’m a big fan of the art style and think that the decision to only include some of the lyrics as text and represent the rest using graphics is really smart, since lots of text doesn’t always look right. I would love to do a piece this complex at some point however I don’t think I could dedicate enough time during this project to do a piece like this well. I especially love this screenshot, I like how the colours look together and the way that the fill of the text is offset.
This is another amazing lyric video by Lizzo, this one has such a great way of conveying the narrative, but is so much more graphical than the last. Again though, I love the way the lyrics aren’t all present, and some things are conveyed with graphics instead. And finally, this one has a more hand-drawn font style, and I love this as this is the route I will be taking for my work.
This piece is quite a contrast to the Lizzo videos, it is much more simple with the main bulk of the piece relying on the text rather than graphics. I think that while it’s not as exciting as the Lizzo videos, it’s still very successful. One thing I have noticed though is that as a consumer of this piece, I found it a little bit boring. I think that there definitely needs to be more for the audience to look at, whether that be more colours, more graphics, or more exciting ways of animating the text.
I really don’t actually like this video, I think its quite boring and it seems like the elements don’t really fit together well. It achieves its goal of being a lyric video but stylistically I just am not a fan.
The colours and subtle glows on the accents are nice though.
This piece appears to be very popular as it has over 74 million views. In my personal opinion though, I don’t think that stylistically it is very good. One of the most prominent rules in design is that you should stick to a font, and this uses so many different fonts in different styles that it is upsetting. The colour scheme is nice, and really fits with the theme of the song (a phoenix rising from the flames) but in general, the text is too distracting for someone who studies this kind of thing to enjoy it.
Although I love the song, I don’t think the separate elements of this video fit together very well. I love the top left screenshot, and think that a whole video in this style could be very successful, but the video also cuts to plain 2D pieces, and some (like the bottom left) are not very stimulating in terms of composition. Others have small problems like inconsistencies in the weights of things (in the bottom right piece, the stop sign should really be the same thickness as the letters). I do like the top right piece, its very bright and fun but I just think its too much more complicated than some of the other shots to look like it fits in with them.
