Learning Agreement
I have chosen to do a portfolio project this semester as this will work best with my skills.
Project Outline
This semester I will be expanding my current portfolio of work with the intention of appealing further to a future employer. From my previous research I have found that employers in the motion graphics industry look for a portfolio spanning a wide variety of projects in both 2D and 3D, and currently my portfolio is just not wide enough.
My projects this semester will cover three briefs; motion graphics/animated lyrical pieces, Twitch overlay graphics, and 3D channel identities. These will give me chance to demonstrate a wide range of 2D and 3D skills.
The lyrical pieces will be short clips of 15-30 seconds from the chorus of songs, that I will create motion graphic lyrics to, and accompany with some hand drawn animated graphics. Due to the brevity of this semester, I have decided that it would be more productive to create shorter higher quality clips, rather than spending all of my time on one whole song. This means I will get the chance to work in different styles and perfect my own visual style.
The 3D channel ident will further build on the 3D skills I developed last semester, with the aim of appealing to employers such as Channel 4, and therefore I will create it in a similar style to some of theirs. I will also create some ‘what’s on next?’ slides to accompany it.
Finally, I decided that I would like to create a Twitch graphic pack. This is quite a niche piece since not many people know a lot about how Twitch works (myself included), however I am eager to learn and then develop some graphics for streamers to use as overlays on their streams, with the possibility of putting them for sale online.
Research Outline
There will be many areas that I need to research into to ensure the success of this project. For the lyric videos, design knowledge will be key; I have studied design before, however I would like to look into different design styles to broaden my knowledge and possibly discover a personal style. There are many books that I can look into about design processes, including Design (Williams, 2015) and Graphic Design Thinking (Lupton, 2011).
For the 3D piece, I already have a lot of knowledge on the subject as I did 3D processes last semester, however I will have to research into channel idents to see trends and create something that is up to date and stylised.
Finally, the Twitch pack will require a different type of research; there aren’t particularly many books or academic pieces detailing the design styles of twitch streamers, and they all have their own individual styles anyway. For this pack, I will research into some of the most common existing packs and create something in a similar style with my own personal flair.
Time Plan
To make sure I can create pieces for each idea within the time frame that I have, I have decided to give myself a rough schedule of working, that I can adapt as I see fit throughout the semester. This also means I need to plan out what I need to create for each brief.
Lyric Videos
-Choose the song for each
-Choose the best clip for each
-Create still frames for each phrase
-Create additional graphics
-Create the motion
Channel Idents
-Design the brand/name/logo
-Choose a skill to demonstrate/plan the animations
-Create each ident
-Create the ‘what’s next’ pieces
Twitch Pack
-Overlays
-Webcam frames
-Different hold screens (One design, multiple text options)
-Transitions between screens
-Panel for profile
-Chat box
-Alerts
-MAYBE subscriber badges (very small 8bit graphics)
