Creating the Donut Machine

2–3 minutes

When trying to create the conveyor belt I came across a repetitive issue; the slats would just not line up properly on the ends. I went through many tutorials and followed them exactly and none of them worked.

I really like tutorials from EJ at Eyedesyn, I find him easy to follow and his tutorials are usually good, and so I found one from him. His does things a little differently, it uses one long plane to wrap around the spline instead of getting cloned slats to follow the spline. I used this to then use the cloner to cover the plane in slats, to get the same initial effect that I wanted.

There are lots of tutorials for creating donuts for beginners to 3D modelling, so I wanted to prove to myself that I have learned enough to create it without a tutorial. I used the torus shape, and duplicated half of it to create the icing on top. I then used the soft selection tool to morph the shapes around the edges to create a slight drippy effect. I had never used this tool before but its really handy for moving more than one point or edge at the same time. Then I extruded the faces to give the icing thickness. This went glitchy at first, because some of the vertices around the edge were too close together, but to fix this I just loop selected these and deleted them.

Then I had to model the machine that produced the donuts. It was very simple, just a big box with a boole. To create the glass, I had a quick look online to remind myself how to make a glass material look good, and then decided to colour it the pink colour to make it look like it was filled with pink liquid. The rest of the modelling is pretty self explanatory; I used a field to create the progress bar, and then keyframed different aspects to create the animation.

At this point when I tried to make the machine work I realised that I would have to use booles to make it look like the blob turns into the donut. This was a bit complicated because they kept colliding with eachother and causing problems, but eventually I modelled it so that the blob was pushed into a boole, and then pushed off the conveyor belt by an invisible wall, and the donut then falls out of a box onto the conveyor belt.
