I have decided that if I am going to do some 3D work, I would love to involve myself in some competition briefs. This will be helpful for me creatively as I am usually bad at just pulling ideas out of thin air and it will also encourage me to work to a strict time scale.
I found an old competition by a company called GreyScaleGorilla. Their competitions have stopped for now, however, their archive of previous briefs goes back for years. Their briefs are all usually one or two words that the entrants have to use to make a 5-second piece. The entries are usually created in Cinema 4D or After Effects (which makes sense since the brand specialises in C4D and AE tutorials) and they are all animated.
Some previous briefs:
- Candy hearts
- Bounce
- Eggs
- Sandcastle
- Homework
- Olympic gold
- Bah humbug
- Bright lights
- Buttons
- Paradise
- Coffee
- Treasure
- Incognito
- Playground
I like that these briefs are so vague, this means I will be able to start my projects by responding to them with lower skill pieces, and as my skills progress, I will be able to create pieces that reflect that.
One benefit of this being an old competition is that there are already many entries for each brief which I could use to inspire my work, and provide an insight into the capabilities of 3D software.
If I were to do these competitions for my project, I would likely end up choosing to do a development project. This semester I just want to develop my skills without too much pressure on creating a perfect final piece. Then by the end, I will have skills that will appeal to employers in the motion graphics sector, and I can use these skills to create a much more complex, larger final piece next semester.
The previous entries for this competition are really inspiring, they are exactly the kind of work that I would love to create one day. Here is one of many of the playlists that contain the entries for the ‘Treasure’ brief.
